Mama
What does the character say?
"Well-what you think your grandmama gone and done with that money?........She went out and she bought you a house!"
What do we learn from what this character says?
We learn that Mama wants to live somewhere better and provide better for her family, and as soon as she got a small chance to, she took advantage of it. She wants to give her family the best she can and she thinks she can do so by buying a new house which may cause a kind of new and better life.


Walter
What does the character say?
"What you need me to say you done right for? You the head of this family. You run our lives like you want to. It was your money and you did what you wanted with it. So what you need for me to say it was all right for? So you butchered up a dream of mine-you-who always talking 'bout your children's dreams..."
What do we learn from what this character says?
This quote shows us that Walter in a way wants to be head of the family but Mama is still taking control. He also is disappointed that she used the money for the house instead of investing in the liquor store.


Ruth
What does the character say?
"Why must you and your brother make an argument out of everything people say?"
What do we learn from what this character says?
Ruth wants peace in the family and wonders why they can't get along and must argue about everything. She understands their sibling rivalry but some of their arguments are unnecessary.


Beneatha

"It means someone who is willing to give up his own culture and submerge himself completely in the dominant, and in this case oppressive culture!"
What do we learn from what this character says?
This shows exactly how Beneatha feels about what blacks have to deal with in society. This reveals that she is very much so an idealist. She has a very strong sense of opinion.
